VOLUNTEER MOZAMBIQUE

RURAL COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Local children in a reed house Early morning sunrise

From 2016 we will be once again running our volunteer opportunities in Zavora, Mozambique. Zavora is close to Inhambane and Tofo, and is about 6 hours north of Maputo. Join us in our paradise of clear blue Indian Ocean and sunsets above the coconut palms. At the end of your volunteering placement why not add on the three countries tour, to experience the South Africa we know and love, as well as Swaziland nature reserves and stunning vistas, hospitality and culture

Our core project work involves community development, incorporating sustainable income opportunities through sewing projects with women, health related activities and education support. There is also an opportunity to get involved with practical work. Medical students can opt to participate in the health development programme, and gain practical experience in the local government hospital in Inharrime. This is appropriate for a medical student elective. Please enquire for further details

This is a community development project where you are able to fully immerse yourself in another culture. The programme is run in by local people, for local people with MozVolunteers providing support for programme participants. It is an amazing opportunity to learn Chope, which is the local language, take local transport to explore the twisting streets of the markets in Inharrime, eat fresh seafood daily and pick coconuts from palm trees. Spend afternoons with children, teaching English and playing and work with our 19 women who are enrolled in our sustainable livelihoods programme - they make products to sell from "capallanas" which are brightly-coloured locally-made wax print sarongs. You will eat the delicious local food - try Nyangana, which is a spinach, coconut and peanut dish, coconut rice, Portuguese chicken and of course Pao, which is a type of bread. Enjoy chai, which is tea made the traditional African way, and coconut cakes for breakfast. In your spare time you can scuba dive, snorkel and enjoy the beach which is a 5 minute journey away, or swing from a hammock under the coconut palms. At spring tide, take a trip out to an olympic sized offshore pool and take underwater photographs of the coral and multicoloured tropical fish. Weekends are free, and you can join a variety of trips.

Enjoy the bright colours, big sunsets, clear ocean and laid back nature of the Mozambique lifestyle, visit church on a Sunday for the amazing singing and spiritual experience. Weekends can be spent at Tofo - the famous backpackers hub, you can enjoy yoga, beach relaxation or party the night away. Accommodation is a lovely reed cottage, close to the lake and a short journey from the beach. Spend evenings around the fire with Narcisso and his family, learn about their lives, eat traditional food and enjoy Mozambiquan dancing. Rooms are shared, bed linen provided but bring your own mosquito net. Join in with daily lakeside yoga, we also offer a daily ride to the beach, after project work. This project is fully-supervised by Alex and Scott as we show you the place closest to our hearts where we founded our organisation in 2008.

This project is a real opportunity to enjoy the real Mozambique, whilst really assisting and helping in the local community by working alongside community members to help them with their needs, as identified by them.
