Students on a medical elective in South Africa Student enjoying their medical elective abroad

This medical elective project is open to medical students and nursing students only. This is a challenging and worthwhile option to take for your medical elective, or as medical work experience volunteering in the international healthcare sector. Students work within our ongoing rural health programme alongside health professionals from all disciplines. Medical students are invited to participate in this elective programme in Ugu district, of KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Expect to participate in an interesting and varied programme, consisting of a variety of types of care. Predominantly, our focus is on HIV prevention and support, TB support, drug adherence support, family health, chronic disease care, child and OVC care and support for vulnerable people.

Come prepared to use the skills that you have for the benefit of others, as well as simultaneously extending your own learning, through hospital placements and medical volunteering. It has been found that medical and nursing students who opt to take a medical elective abroad, in a different country and culture later use the experience to enrich their professional conduct and practice. This program will help with broadening your perspective to different kinds of models of care, working on an interdisciplinary healthcare team and, of course, working with vulnerable populations.

We work with students to develop a programme that is focused on individual academic requirements, as well as addressing the needs of the three partner organisations who facilitate the student's participation in healthcare activities. Students are given the opportunity to work with children, provide HIV support, work in a clinical setting at a local tertiary hospital and provide palliative and community level care.
